How to work out how many tiles you need

Area (m²) = length × width
Tile area (m²) = tile length (mm) × tile width (mm) ÷ 1,000,000
Tiles = area ÷ tile area × (1 + waste)

Tiles per square metre

Tile sizeTiles per m²
100 × 100 mm100
200 × 100 mm (metro)50
300 × 300 mm11.11
600 × 300 mm5.56
600 × 600 mm2.78
1200 × 600 mm1.39

Waste: 10% for a straight lay, 15% for a herringbone or diagonal pattern, and more for small rooms with lots of cuts.

Worked example

A 3 m × 2.5 m floor is 7.5 m². With 600 × 300 mm tiles (0.18 m² each) that is 41.7 tiles, or 46 tiles with 10% waste: 8 boxes of 6.
